Current age:    62

Current occupation:    Technical Manager

Comment:    I have been in the electronic and computer industry since leaving Clevo culminating in becoming the Technical Director of the largest industrial hand held computer company in the world, Telxon now mergered with Symbol. I resigned in 1996 and retired for a year, however I had to go back to work through boredom and am currently the Technical Manager of Bar Code Data Systems a data capture integrator.

I could never have achieved this without the teacher perseverance in educating me. This was no mean feat as in those days I was more interested in sport than learning.

I have a lot to thank Clive Fraser, Elwyn Lynnne, Alan Leer, Charlie Kuippers

Lucy Chapman and Mr Hoolihan for, and lastly of course "The Shape" Mr Bradley (to this day I have to refer to him as Mr. Bradley). The versatility of the teachers of the era was such that most of these teachers at one stage or another coached me in sport. I will never forget Clive Fraser giving me the greatest lecture about the merits of playing football and cricket for the school and not on weekends.

There are friends I have not seen for many years and often wonder where and what, guys like Graham Harris School Captain 1959, Brain Crofts, Ron Taylor, Ray Livermoore, Graham Roberts, Graeme Stevens, Mick Rolfe and Bill Barton.

When I think that I travelled from Croydon every morning for 5 years and never could quite understand how I had to travel so far. In hind sight I would do it all again if it meant going to Clevo. They were great days.

Comment: Began at Clevo in 1957(big school 3rd class !!!) Made many friends during my stay (Dennis Knigh-Smithand Bruce Powney are life long friends). I was School Captain in 1960 (6thClass) and had Mr. Caffery as my class teacher.  Tom Moran was the teacherin 4th and 5th class. 1960 had some highlights and I was happy to represent ourschool with Terry Crowe at the 1960 Davis Cup.  Terry and I had the honourof being ballboys for Rod Laver, Chuck McKinley and all the great stars of thetennis world of the day. I remember being asked, at the end of year function,by Pat Hills MP where I would like to be placed in High School....of course ithad to be Clevo !!! He let me into a secret and said 'That is where you aregoing to'....I was extremely pleased.

1961 Saw first year High Schooland we were blessed to have EXCELLENT teachers. Nulla Dies Sine Line.....what amotto....what wisdom !!! I left school in 4th Year in 1964.  Last jobbefore retirement was teaching in TAFE (must have liked it because I was there22 years).  Final Comment..... John Craig said it all at a reunionrecently.....Cleveland Street High School gave students excellence in availableprograms, excellence in teaching and excellence in opportunities.  BobOutterside (my mathematics teacher) said 'Clevo was the best school I evertaught at'.  Long live Clevo......May its next 150 years be as fruitful asthe first 150 years !!!

Comment:    My Dad attended the school between 1935 & 1937 and was a Prefect (possibly Captain) in a group photo taken in 1937. His 1935 & 1936 Reports show a capable student but "throwing away his chances in a few subjects". He was a keen sportsman and I have team photos of him in the First XI 1935-37 (including a Shield winning team with no date visible), First XIII 1936-37 (including as Captain of the winning University Shield team) and the winning Athletics Team in 1935. He also played first grade for Paddington Cricket Club.

Comment: Clevo was multicultural before the word was thought of.My mates were Paul Mylonas, Bill Singh and Ron Seto. We pretty much came from the four corners of the world. Great teachers -Miss moon got us into Gilbert and Sulivan, Elwyn Lynn got us thinking about the fusion of art and the history of warfare. Loved the old buildings, only lacked one thing -girls!

mould.

Comment: Arrived 1953 from Daceyville Public SchooL paced in 1E.I left at the intremedite and went to work , Mr Spray , tried to get me to work at Qantas,  later completing leaving certificate at night, attended Newcastle Teachers College , and gained B.Edn.

Memories, Mr Lear woodwork classes, AND THE STEPS IN THE PREPATAION OF TIMBER WRITTEN ON PAPER AND PASTED ONTO PLYWOOD , this had to be on your bench at all times in woodwork classesa. Mr newton, Mr Spry  Mr Bradley, ( the shape or somtimes pear shape )lucy Chapman, ( this French teacher is mentioned in a lot of ex students comments ). Mr Ray Gallager,  a teacher I later taugth with, travelling to school by tram from Kingsford, some of the old rooms i.e behind the library, upstairs in the old building, the  attempted double glazed windows that blocked out air but not the noise of the trams going over the points on the corner of Cleveland St and Chalmers St, the Technical Drawing room way upstairs somewhere, buying an ice cream in a dish with chocolate and malt at the milk bar across the road while waiting for a tram home.

Retired from teaching and back into building, still building.

Comment: I arrived In AustraliaSeptember 1955 and enrolled at Clevo in 1956 with a broad Lancashire accent andI quickly learned Orstraylyan to avoid what I guess would now be labelledracial abuse, we lived at Ashfield and never worked out how come I was sent toClevo. My major achievments were in the ATC No. 24 Flight, I won the Flightsfirst Flying Scolarship and achieved the rank of Warrant Officer. Unfortunatelymy scholastic results were not as noteworthy. Clevo was a pretty rowdy schoolin those days, half the school burnt down in 1958 and we had to go the thelocal church hall for lessons, spent half the day marching backwards andforward across Prince Alfred Park. Some of the memorable teachers: Mr Kefford(pretty good with the stick), Mr Fraser, C.O.of the ATC, Mr Leer woodwork, MrMcGuirk, metal work, Mr Wick French, Mr Hoolihan Maths,Mr Dusty Music and manymore. I was in the School representative soccer team with Johnny Warren butcertainly not in the same class as a player.

Comment:    The memories I have of "Clevo" are all good, I met some great people ther(i.e. Graham Harris and John Meagher from Summer Hill, Ron Tighe from Burwood and Reg Livermore. We all played Rugby League together at the weekend for Homebush). I also remember the teachers (Jock Fraser who used to drive me to school in his Ford,Mark Spray and Mr Driscoll who used to steal my cigarettes. I had a very enjoyable time at "Clevo" although I did not think so at the time.

My brother David (deceased) preceeded me at "Clevo" so I had a lot to live up to.

Comment:    I was one of the western suburb mob who caught the train into Central Station every day to get to Clevo.  In metalwork classes we made the square key to lock doors on all electric trains.  I had only recently arrived in Sydney from Nimbin, so attending Clevo was a real eye-opener and an education in itself.  I completed about 10 subjects for the Intermediate Certificate with memorable teachers such as Lucy Chapman(French), Mr Fraser (Geography), Mrs Grey (English), and Mr Leer (Woodwork - and an accurate thrower of chalk and wood off-cuts).  Went on to do the Leaving Certificate with Elwin Lynn (English teacher who wore outragous socks, ripple-soled shoes and bob-tailed ties) and Mr Kefford (who somehow got us through maths).  Mr Bradbury (the Shape) was headmaster all those years.  The science block burnt down and most of my year did not get good results in science in the Leaving Certificate.  George Chu always came top academically and Ray Livermore excelled at all sports.  Clevo's soccer teams did very well with the young Johnny Warren(a year below) and other members of his local weekend team playing, and if my memory serves me correctly, our basket ball team was unbeatable in the high school comp.  I was a prefect in 1959 and won a couple of subject awards for Technical Drawing during my time at Clevo.  John Harris was school captain.  In 1960 I started at Uni of NSW doing science but left and went to Canberra to work for the CSIRO.  I finished my degree and spent 12 years involved in wildlife research with CSIRO before moving to The University of Queensland where I obtained a PhD and joined the lecturing staff, retiring in 2001 after 26 years of academic life.  I published over 150 research papers, 3 books and had 25 postgraduate students.  Most of my work is about Australian wildlife, especially bats.  I married a Brisbane girl, Rae, and we have a son and a daughter.  I live at Maleny.  I have only fond memories of my days at Clevo.  I received much more than just a formal education.  I made friends with a wide range of other boys with amazing backgrounds and cultures - some of their surnames were hard to pronounce and impossible to spell.  An example was George Tsicounis - still don't know if I am spelling it correctly!  Conrad Averdician, where are you now?  Yes, great memories.

Comment: On discovering thissite I located my old copies of The Echo magazine and recalled how the Schooland its Teachers had contributed to my direction in life and interests in sucha major way.

A page of candid photographs ofmany of the teachers, (I hope they all forgave me), allowed me to reflect on mypassion for photography and the encouragement Allan Leer in particular hadgiven me. The interest ultimately lead to a career in Documentary Film asa    Cinematographer, later Lecturing at AFTRS and now approaching retirement still teaching Cinematography.

Miss Seminara and Lucy Chapmanhad an obvious affection for the French Language and Culture. Their lessonsremain with me today and were extremely valuable when visiting France with myfamily.  Elwin Lynn taught me English, in later years he became a highlydistinguished Artist and Art Critic.

Thank you Cleveland Street Highand the many dedicated Teachers at the school for providing such a great startin life.

Comment:    Some of the teachers' names I still remember are: Miss Harker,Kindergarten, Mrs. Thompson, 2nd.   Miss Patterson, 3rd.  Mrs. Martin, 4th.  Mr. Leithead, 5th. but I can't recall the name of my 6th. class teach although I should as he would often relate some of his horrifying experieces from the Great War in which he served. The Headmaster was Mr. Le Roy who on one occasion confused us by telling the school assembly that he was taking a boat trip 'back home', whick turned out to be England. He was not English but in those days many people referred to England as 'home'.

Mrs. Martin used to have a keen interest in singing and would have me singing a duet with Ronnie Strachan in front of the class whenever any visitors arrived. Ron went on to make a name for himself as either the Director of Taronga Park or the Australian Museum I am not sure.

A couple of things stand out in my memories of teachers, one was of Mrs. Thompson, who was English, and was very excited about the English aviatrix Amy Johnson, who had just completed the first solo flight from England to Australia by a woman. The whole of second class were taken out to the park to scan the sky to see the plane circle Sydney. What excitement it caused. The other recollection was of Mr. Leithead, who while writing on the blackboard would watch our reflections in the glass of a large picture above, and if he detected a wrongdoer he would turn and throw the chalk at the culprit. He was very accurate too. Just imagine teachers getting away with actons like that. Current affairs programmes would crucify them. I have many happy recollections of Clevo and always look nostalgically at it whenever I pass.

I served five years in the Australian Imperial Forces, two of them in New Guinea and on return to civil life managed various businesses until my retirement.

Kind regards, Bob Johnson.

I enjoyed my stay at the school and found it an excellent preparation for my future studies and career as an engineer and manager in the Railways and other State owned industry sectors.

Comment:    I enjoyed my 3 years at Clevo. Mr Moran was my teacher in 4th and 5th class, Mrs Dickenson was my 6th class teacher.   Mr Bamber was the Headmaster. I was there in 1956 when the centenary of the school was celebrated and I still have the pennant given out to each student.  I was the eldest of 5 children who attended Clevo and my two brothers went the Boys High School. 25 years ago I worked in the library when the last classes of the Boys High School and the Intensive Language Centre shared the facility.  Ms Anne Bates was the Librarian then. I also worked in the office of the Intensive Language Centre, Ms Rosalind Strong was Head Teacher.  I have fond memories of Clevo and the teachers who coped very with enormous class sizes. Looking forward to the 150year reunion.

Comment: first female Head Teacher, did not use the cane (shock horror)Arrival of Disadvantaged Schools Funding, wonderful.

Creation of the Library ReadingRoom, and thereby able to have films and performances.(Though we had othermemorable performances in Newtown, {"Hamlet"!}, and at the Tom MannTheatre across the road.

Creation of Reading support teamCrazy, enthusiastic and hard working staff. A wonderful "boss". Manymemorable boys, many who "did it tough" outside school (and inside?),but who honoured the teachers by their learning.

Comment:    When I arrived in Australia and enrolled at Clevo, I was dismayed to realise that Mr Moran would be my teacher in 4th class.  I look back and realise just how much patience he had teaching this lefthander how to write.

Then in 5th class it was Miss Pike - oh no!  But what a true mentor she turned out to be.  If only I realised at the time how wise she was.

Now I live and work in Darwin and have been in touch with a couple of old classmates after about 45 years.

Mr Preston was Head Master forInfants and Primary, and as my parents had little money Mr Preston would payfrom his own pocket for my class photographs. My Mother was cleaner at theschool when Mr Bradley and Mr Hunt were Head Masters of the High School. Wouldlike to hear from any Primary School teachers from the 1960s.

Comment: Hospital ward clerk, secretary, enrolled nurse in the Australian Military, registered nurse, teacher,PhD candidate. The principal of the primary school in the early 1960s was amazing. In grade 3 he used to get a few grade 5 English students to come down to myclass to compete with me in spelling tests in front of the whole class. Afterthat, he rewarded me with chocolates because I always got the words right. Thistook place two years after I came to Australia from China so I suppose it wasunusual that I had perfected the English spelling in that time. He stimulatedmy interest in the English language and after 40 years,

I have completed a PhD inCreative Writing at Adelaide University. In 1963, the headmaster allowed mythree-year-old sister, Raya, to go to school with me because my mother was tooill to look after her. She sat next to me in class and the teachers brough hertoys and food.

Every assembly, the headmasterwould carry Raya up the long flight of steps to address the students below inthe quadrangle.

Later, he spoke to thekindergarten headmistress and Raya was allowed to start school at the age offour. I remember watching army cadets performing their drill in the grounds ofthe senior school and I think that is what stimulated my interest  in the Army because I enlisted in theAustralian Army in 1971. At lunchtime we sat under the huge trees in theparkland at the back of the school.

We weren't supposed to, but everymorning before school, my two young brothers and I went swimming at the localswimming pool and after school, played dressups in a colourful caravan whichwas located in front of the library. [I would love to know if I can have copiesof old class photographs as my family was too poor to afford them then. Iremember students getting music books and my sorrow in not getting one becausethe students had to pay for them. Then one day, I got an old copy free ofcharge from my teacher and I carried it with me wherever I went. Years later, Ijoined a Russian Church Choir and learned to sing. For the next twenty years, Itaught children in Adelaide to sing for the Far East Broadcasting Company inSan Fransisco. The company beamed Christian programs into the Soviet Union viathe short wave radio because Christians there were prohibited from going tochurch. I am currently doing research on Redfern because I am writing novelabout my life in Redfern and at Cleveland Street School. Thank you for thissite.
