In
addition to providing the day to day programs for students enrolled
at this school, we are committed to supporting new arrival students
and their teachers in NSW public schools. In particular we are developing
strategies to provide online support to new arrival students and
their teachers in rural and isolated areas.
Below are some of our resources currently available. As we develop
new resources these will be added to the site. These resources are
used with students attending Cleveland Street Intensive English
High School (CSIEHS) and are included because of their effectiveness
in achieving student language outcomes.
At
CSIEHS the English as a second language (ESL) curriculum is taught
through the Key Learning Areas (KLAs). Teachers will find these
resources of use to both ESL and English speaking background students
(ESB) who need explicit language and literacy support. The resources
available below are applicable to use with a range of age/stage
students and relate to the NSW curriculum.
This
resource was created by teachers at Cleveland Street Intensive
English High School to suppprt younger students (primary and
stage 4) with learning difficulties. Chi Chi is a story about
a chimpanzee. It uses many important sight words to aid emergent
readers and employs repetition of structure to teach sequencing
connectives. There are downloads and many interactive activities
that accompany the text.
CSIEHS
would like to thank Anne Eastman, Ian Cooke, Sanaa Dabbagh
and John Summons for their assistance in the production of
this resource.
HSIE
This
resource was created by teachers at Cleveland Street Intensive
English High School. It
uses the topic of wetlands, eg, mangroves (Global Environments,
Stage 4; Ecosystems at Risk, Stage 6) as the field/content
knowledge for the teaching of academic English and the information
report text type as used in HSIE and other subjects. It includes
interactive exercises and bilingual support materials.
CSIEHS
would like to thank Pam Takans, Qiming Zhou, John Summons,
the bilingual support staff and Sydney's Bicentennial Park
staff for their assistance in the production of this resource.
This
resource is for the use of students in the early part of their

of the computer keyboard and basic word processing terminology.
The unit also provides material for English language activities
at this level.
CSIEHS
would like to thank John Summons for the production of this
resource.
This

and keys on the keyboard. It also teaches students, through
a series of exercises, how to edit text using the keyboard
and mouse, as well as other basic keyboard skills.
CSIEHS
would like to thank John Summons for the production of this

This
resource is for the use of students in the final ten weeks
of their course at Cleveland Street. It uses the topic of
digestion* as the field/content knowledge for the teaching
of academic English as used in science and other subjects.
It includes interactive exercises and bilingual support materials.
CSIEHS
would like to thank John Summons and the bilingual support

This
resource is for the use of students in the first ten weeks
of their course at Cleveland Street. It uses scientific apparatus
to teach such language features as location and the notions
of shape, material and purpose. It also provides an early
experience in writing a simple information report. In addition,
it covers two simple procedures (lighting a Bunsen burner
and solution filtration) to introduce the language of procedure
in a science context.
CSIEHS
would like to thank John Summons and Anna Koleth for the production
of this resource.

and support materials which are in pdf form and can be printed.
Adobe Acrobat Reader can be downloaded for free from the Adobe website.
Some activities require Shockwave Player, a free plug-in from Macromedia.
If you don't already have this very useful software, a free download
can be obtained from Macromedia's web site by clicking the following
